HOME · MOUNTAINCOW MONTHLY NEWSLETTER (NOVEMBER 2005)

It’s turkey time and we’re thankful to bring you a new batch of great holiday ideas from Mountaincow Monthly! To help you get ready for this holiday season, we’ve designed menus and place cards for your Thanksgiving table, address labels for the holiday gifts you’ll soon be sending, and individual gift tags and stickers to identify whose gift is whose. And we’ve even got great holiday card designs that are perfect for including a photo or holiday letter.

Stay the courses
Help your guests pace themselves with all your wonderful courses by offering them a menu of what you’re serving. Knowing Uncle David made his famous brownies may actually encourage the family to leave room for dessert. And by getting the credit he deserves, maybe Uncle David will bring the brownies again for Christmas. Create matching place cards to set a beautiful, dressed up table where you can ensure no one takes your seat.

PrintingPress users create a menu using ivory paper with a hearty harvest graphic with rich fall tones on top and the courses written below in Benjamin Caps from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. The same font is used on the ivory place cards.

The Platinum menu and place cards both use lemon drop stationery with a background image of wheat. The golden tones of the paper and wheat image establish the harvest theme. For our menu, we used an A6 card, now available without envelopes in our online store. The dinner details and guests’ names are written in the Alyssa and Alyssa Afternoon fonts from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings.

Go Extreme by making a small program for your Thanksgiving dinner. We chose a color scheme to match the falling leaves, using a variety of A2 folded cards: Pumpkin, Pistachio and Lemon Drop. On the cover, we shaped the hosts’ names into a circle with an oak leaf in the center. We scattered oak and maple leaves around the inside among the menu text written in Benjamin Caps from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings and Noodles from Fonts & Graphics 3. The leaf images are from Fonts & Graphics 2 and were recolored red. We used the vertical justification tool to evenly space all the lines of text on both sides of the menu for a quick elegant look. The place card is designed for the guest’s name to be shaped into a semi-circle with a maple leaf in the center.

Ship ahoy
Your holiday gifts being shipped afar don’t have to be sent in drab packaging. Liven up the boxes with festive address labels. Upgrade to PrintingPress Extreme to create address labels of any shape and size, just match it to the labels you buy in an office supply store. To make them holiday-worthy, we added custom festive borders.

We created two different address labels. For both labels, the first line in the address is made a different color so the names of the recipients will really stand out. The candy cane pattern was imported from the holiday folder and trimmed with dark red lines. A single candy cane was imported next to the return address. The snowflake pattern is a custom pattern that was designed by alternating a small and large snowflake image on a very light blue background and trimmed with blue lines. The return address was shaped as a quarter circle around a single snowflake. For more information on creating custom patterns, please check out the new Extreme Tip section at the end of the newsletter.

Tag, you're it!
When it comes to labeling your gifts once you’ve wrapped them, you either forgot to buy gift tags or the tags you have are completely the wrong size or color to go with your package. Use PrintingPress to create gift tags that are just right for your gifts and the giver.

Using white or blue place cards, PrintingPress users can make mini cards for their gifts with the recipient’s name on the outside and a note inside. No more writing in tiny letters to try and squeeze everyone’s name onto a sticker the size of a postage stamp! Punch a hole in them to attach by ribbon or use double stick tape to the back.

Platinum users can actually create place cards and create a mailing list of their gift getters so the names print directly onto the front of the cards without having to retype each name. The background of the front of the card is set to a solid color so the writing and snowflakes can appear white and really pop.

Extreme users can print sheets of colorful labels for each gift recipient, which is especially useful for small kids who get loads of little presents. Just print out a sheet per child and you’ll tag all your wrapped gifts in a flash with the self-adhesive stickers. The blue labels use the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings and a triangle design made using the pattern creator. The red labels use the Sky Pie font and the background pattern uses red on red swirls.

What a card!
Sending holiday cards can seem like a daunting task, but once you have your PrintingPress mailing list ready, you only need to update the addresses from year to year and the hardest part is done. The fun part is choosing your design or photo you plan to use on the actual card.

Our PrintingPress design incorporates a band of whimsical penguins on the front of a white folded A7 card and includes a personal message inside. Pair with a Deep Red A7 envelope.

Our Platinum design uses a scattered pattern of mod snowflakes on the front a folded card with a holiday greeting written at the bottom in Noodles Strong from Fonts & Graphics 3. We used Blueberry Truffle folded A7 stationery and double stick tape to adhere a wallet-size photograph to the front of the card.

Our Extreme design shows a gigantic H in the Ryan font outlined in red and filled with the circles and square pattern found in the Mod Squad folder. We printed the card on the new Rose A7 folded stationery which combines Pink cards with Deep Red envelopes.

Custom Patterns
PrintingPress Extreme enables you to easily fill text, borders, monograms and backgrounds using one of our 285 built-in patterns. The drop down color and pattern menu from the Fill Color and Background Color buttons in the Text toolbar offers all the choices of the Color menu as well as additional choices for choosing and creating patterns.

You can also easily create your own custom patterns. To create a custom pattern, select Create / Edit pattern... in the color and pattern menu. The Create Pattern window will appear. A preview of your pattern appears on the right side of the window.

Use the tools in the window to change the background color, the shape details such as color, line thickness, even choose an image to repeat. To use an alternate shape, check Use alternate shape and specify the details for that shape as well. Specify the distance between each shape horizontally and vertically, and whether or not to stagger rows horizontally.

Once you have chosen or created a pattern, you can use the Adjust pattern option to adjust the scale of the pattern, rotate the pattern or recolor the pattern. You can edit custom patterns that you created as well using the Edit pattern option. To learn more about this and other new PrintingPress Extreme features, visit the Extreme software tour.
