Extreme Tip

custom border feature lets you create your own designs using any combination of 31 line types and any color or pattern. The controls in the Border palette in the Design palette group let you customize your border.

Click on the Border Shape combo box to specify the shape for your custom border.

Custom Border Shapes

If you create a custom border with the Border Shape set to Rectangle, Oval, Line (Bottom), Line (Left), Line (Top), Line (Right), Double Line (Top/Bottom) or Double Line (Left/Right), then you can choose from any of the 31 line types including Dots,  Loop, Ric Rac, Greek Key and Double Line.

Custom Border Shapes

If your Border Shape is set to any of the other shapes, then you can choose from one of the 10 available line types.

Custom Border Line Types

Specify the thickness of your outline using the Outline Thickness control. Use the Fill Width control to specify the width of the fill color or pattern. In the example below, we have a custom border with a brown dotted outline and a blue fill.

Custom Border

You can change the border to use two colors using the Alternate Line Color feature. The Adjacent to Fill button lets you control whether or not the outline overlaps the fill of the border. In the example below on the left, the Adjacent to Fill setting is disabled so that the line overlaps the fill. In the example on the right, the Adjacent to Fill setting is enabled so that the line does not overlap the fill but is adjacent to it.

Overlapping Fill Adjacent to Fill

Use the Outline Spacing control to adjust the spacing between the dots, dashes, etc. in the line. In the example below on the left, the Outline Spacing is set to zero. In the example below on the right, the Outline Spacing is set to 8.
